In the human body there are nine primary holes, or “gates”: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, one mouth, one anus, and one genital orifice. This metaphor, borrowed from Vedic cosmology, may seem strange, but it gives us a transformative way in which to view the body—a city whose gates require robust defense.
